The KRDEP is a sequel to the Kumasi Roads and Urban Development Project (KRUDP) which was completed earlier. The project comprised of the following subcomponents
The KRUDP did not have adequate funds to undertake all the works prepared and as a result the KRDEP was prepared to undertake the outstanding works which comprised mainly of the extension of the lining of the Sisa Stream for another 2.0km and the extension of the Lake Road from Km 2 +700 to about Km 5 + 200
To improve travel options and access to and within the southern parts of the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area.
The scope of works includes the following
– Extension of the Lake Road from K2+540 to K5+200 and its associated works
– Construction of structures including
– The Lake Road Bridge at K4+100,
– S-line vehicular Bridge at Ch. 0+900 and
– S-line footbridge at Ch. 1+020.
– The Extension of the lining of the Sissai Drain by an additional 2 km and 100m of stone pitching.
– Design and supervision of the construction of the extension of Lake Road
– Design and supervision of the construction of the new Atonsu Terminal and about 360m Terminal access road

The percentage of work completed by the contactor as of March 2023, is 98% as against programmed works of 100%. The contract officially expired on December 31, 2021, but an extension has been requested till the end of July 2022. Breakdown of progress is as follows.

Ongoing works consists of installation of streetlights, road line markings and signs, guardrails, and traffic signals.
The contactor is ahead of schedule with achievement at 57%. The contractor is currently working on the Mechanized Stabilized Earth walls and filling for abutment A2. This activity is on-going which has been interrupted by intermittent rainfall.
It should be noted that the submission of the designs on the ground works by QGMI-UK is critical for works to start and to forestall any delays that the rains may cause. Outstanding works to be accomplished include but no limited to fabrication and installation of Precast Planks and main members of the bridge and road works.

The Sunyani Road in Kumasi is part of the National Route 6 (N6), the roads start from Apenkwa on the N1 in the Greater Accra Region and ends in Gonokrom in the Bono Region.
The section of concern is from the Centre for National Culture through the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital on to the Bekwai Roundabout through Sofoline Interchange and ends at Abuakwa.
The section of concern is within Greater Kumasi Metropolis and acts as an urban arterial. This section was one of the most congested routes identified in the Kumasi Arterial Roads study undertaken by Messrs. Comptran Engineering and Planning Associates and recommended the dualization and intersection improvement of some junctions.

Background
The Department of Urban Roads was allocated ten (10) components of the fifty (50) nos. There are three of them in the Greater Ashanti Region.
