The Department of Urban Roads was originally set up by the Central Government in 1988 to address some specific challenges being experienced at the time with the management of the urban road infrastructure in some of the cities of Ghana, specifically Accra, Kumasi, Tema and Takoradi by the then City Councils.
As a result of its creation, we have been concentrating our activities in specific cities and urban canters of Ghana. This has been the case till the year 2011 when the Local Government Service created by Act 656, Local Government Service ACT, 2003 which was passed by the parliament of the Republic of Ghana became effective.
The Local Government Service has an objective: “to secure effective administration and management of local government in Ghana and also as its mission to create a world class, decentralized and client oriented- service.”
Towards this objective several government departments have become part of the assembly structure at the local level. Metropolitan and Municipal assemblies have decentralized departments including an Urban Roads Department.
